Destination of the Month: May Summer Festival in Mount Abu, Rajasthan

Mount Abu is the desert-state Rajasthan’s only hill station. This makes it a haven for people looking to get away from the heat waves that plague most of North India in summers. In May, it comes alive with the celebration of the vibrant and musical Summer Festival.

The town of Mount Abu is located at an elevation of 1220 meters and is a popular retreat from the heat of Rajasthan. Attractions include a number of stunning Jain temples and the pretty Nakki Lake. The mountain is also home to several Hindu temples.

Where is it?
The nearest airport from Mount Abu is in Udaipur, 185 km away. National Highways 8 and 14 and smaller roads connect it to Jodhpur, Delhi and other major Indian cities. The nearest train station is approximately two hours away by car.

What is it?
Folk music and dances are a big part of Rajasthani culture. For the pleasure of visitors, performances of popular folk dances like Ghoomar and Daph are organized and boat races take place on the famous Nakki Lake.

Renowned ‘qawwals’ from all over India enthral audiences at what is known as The Sham-e-Qawwali (Evening of Poems). Unfortunately, language can be a barrier for this event as most recitations are not in English, but there is still plenty of atmosphere to savour even if you don’t understand the poetry. A fascinating display of fireworks brings the festival to a thundering close.

This year, the 2-day festival will be celebrated from 15th to 17th May.
